Thermal Analysis

Thermal analysis encompasses the set of analytical techniques that study the thermal behavior of materials. When a material is heated or cooled, its structure and chemical composition undergo changes: melting, solidification, crystallization, oxidation, decomposition, transition, expansion, sintering, etc.

Among the thermal analysis techniques we have Thermogravimetry (TG) and Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) in the materials characterization unit of the service.

In thermogravimetric analysis, the variation in the mass of a sample placed in a controlled atmosphere is continuously recorded as a function of temperature or the time during which its temperature increases. This variation in mass can be due to a loss of mass or a gain of mass. Thermogravimetry is currently being used coupled with other techniques, such as DTA or DSC, and also EGA techniques.

Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) is a quantitative technique that allows information to be obtained on the temperature at which the energy change under study takes place and the heat involved in the process. In heat flow DSC, the variation in heat flow between the sample and the reference is measured when they are subjected to a temperature program in a controlled atmosphere.

Instrumental Facilities

TG-DSC analyzer Setsys evolution 16/18 (Setaram) . This equipment is equipped with a robust graphite furnace that allows the temperature to rise from room temperature to 1200ºC. This equipment allows measurements to be made in an inert atmosphere (N 2 ) or air. Different temperature ramps can be selected during the same measurement.

Applications

TG-DSC allows us to study first-order transition processes (melting, solidification, crystallization, etc.), study polymorphisms, determination of humidity and ash, compositional studies, identification of polymers, study of oxidations, determinations of degree of purity, etc.

Sample requirements

This technique can be used to measure powders and solids such as polymers, geological material, dried plants, mortars, waste, etc. In the case of liquid material, please consult the service.

Required sample quantity: 5-50 mg

Process temperature range: 20-1200ºC
