SRM-755 Superconducting Rock Magnetometer

The SRM-755 Superconducting Rock Magnetometer is equipment that allows the determination of the natural remanent magnetization of sediment and rock soundings, as well as discrete samples automatically, in terms of intensity and direction (magnetic moment, magnetization) and direction (spatial location vector through declination and inclination values).

Instrumental Facilities
Magnetómetro criogénico superconductor SRM-755 (2G Enterprises)
Deseñado para medir valores de magnetización débiles (nivel de ruido estimado 10-9), grazas ao seu ciclo superconductor (magnetómetro de tipo squid).
Technical characteristics:
Demagnetizing coils by alternating magnetic fields (AF) of up to 160 m
IRM (Isothermal Remanent Magnetization) magnetizer up to 1 Tesla
Anhysteretic Remanent Magnetization (ARM) Gradual Acquisition System
SQuID (Superconducting Quantum Interference Device) DC sensors: total magnetic moment dipole noise level of < 10-9 emu
and maximum measurement values of 5×10-2 emu
Field attenuation 106, for transverse fields, and 1011, for axial fields
Pulse Tube Cryocooler System (completely liquid helium-free system)
Rapid cooling system (36 hours)
Access to more 4.2 cm diameter samples
Applications
- Determination of natural remanent magnetization (NRM)
- Determination of antihysteretic remanent magnetization (ARM)
- Determination of isothermal remanent magnetization (IRM)
Very useful in the analysis of sediments and rocks in studies of palaeomagnetism and environmental magnetism, archaeomagnetism, pollen, climate change, geochronology, stratigraphy, tectonics..
Sample requirements
- U-channels are up to 1.50 m long.
- Discrete samples (≈10 cc)
- One request will be made for each survey.
- Samples will be delivered to the Core Scanning Laboratory (Floor -2, CACTI Tower Annex). Please check with the Service to confirm sample reception hours.
- Sample collection period after analysis: 1 month
