PPMS (Physical Property Measurement System) Magnetometry Unit

9 Tesla PPMS Magnetometer
PPMS is an automated low-temperature, magnet-based system that allows measuring material properties such as specific heat, AC and DC magnetic susceptibility, and electrical and thermal transport properties (Hall effect, thermoelectric figure of merit, and Seebeck effect).

Instrumental Facilities
The equipment consists of a base platform that controls the temperature in the range between 1.9 and 400 K and a superconducting coil (cooled with liquid helium) that allows the application of an external magnetic field of up to 9 Teslas. Different measurement modules can be installed on this basic platform to obtain information on magnetic, electrical and thermal properties.
The different modules in this Service allow the following physical characterizations to be made:
- Magnetic Characterization of Materials: Vibrating Sample Technique (VSM)
- Thermal Characterization of Materials: Heat Capacity Technique (HC); and Heat Transport Technique (TTO), which includes thermal conductivity, Seebeck effect, and electrical conductivity.
- Electrical Characterization of Materials: DC electrical resistivity measurement technique; and AC electrical transport measurement technique, which includes electrical resistivity, Hall effect, IV curves and critical current.
Applications
It covers fields of application such as: applied physics, materials science, engineering, industrial, electricity and electronics, study of magnetic materials, biomedical engineering, geology, medicine, among others.
Sample requirements
The samples must not contain traces of grease, oil, or any composition that could endanger the integrity of the equipment and must not be toxic or harmful.
The quantity and form of the samples will depend on the characterization that is to be performed (contact the technicians for more information).
