Radiochemical Techniques

The facilities of the Radiochemical Techniques Laboratory allow research work to be carried out with radioactive isotopes under the highest safety conditions, thus ensuring the management and control of orders for radioactive material, as well as the management of radioactive waste generated at the University in a centralized manner. The medical monitoring of users will be contracted with the National Dosimetry Center of Valencia and the Center’s staff will be responsible for managing and changing personal dosimeters.
The laboratory has two safety cabinets for work with gamma and beta radioactive isotopes, as well as a waste warehouse that has mobile tanks for both liquid and solid waste, with adequate shielding for the different isotopes. It also has a zone radiation detector. This laboratory is a category II facility that allows work with Fe-59, I-125, C-14, P-32 and H-3.
Instrumental Facilities
Liquid Phase Scintillation Counter for Beta Particles WALLAC model 1409-012
- Capacity of 336 to 1248 samples, depending on the type of vial used.
- CPM or DPM counting system.
- Microcomputer-controlled system.
- Internal counter library with the spectra of the most common isotopes for gamma and beta emissions, S-32, I-125, C-14, P-35 and H-3.
- Possibility of working in luminometer mode, by deactivating the coincidence system.
Solid Phase Scintillation Counter for Gamma Radiation WALLAC model 1470-001
- Detector de NaI (Tl).
- Elimination of the “Crosstalk” effect.
- Counter with conveyor system with capacity for 550 samples.
- Robotic arm sample changer.
- Counting library for the most common isotopes: I-125, I-129, I-131, Co-57, Se-75, Cr-51.
- It allows automatic background subtraction, half-life correction, Crosstalk correction. and the possibility of visualizing the spectrum of the sample being counted in real time.
It also has a program for processing radioimmunoassay data.
Applications
In this unit, radiometric studies can be carried out, focusing essentially on radioimmunoassay tests (RIA and IRMA), for example the quantification of hormonal concentration in biological samples, as well as the study of the physiological and pathological characteristics of receptors.
Applications range from the clinical field to biological and environmental sciences.
Sample requirements
This unit is in Self-Service.
Users must be authorized by the IRA manager to perform operations in the facility.
The samples will be prepared by the user and measured by the user on the corresponding counter.
